Radio frequency identification (RFID), also known as dedicated short range communication, has been in development since the 1940s and has found an ever increasing number of industrial applications since the 1980s. RFID has become an effective alternative to barcodes as the technology does not require a direct line of sight. RFID has proved to be a highly successful method of tracking and controlling stocks, assets and resources. With custom applications being continuously developed the technology is set to play an  increasing role in both business and daily life.

Below is a brief timeline of the development of RFID:

 

The Decades of RFID Decade Event
1940 - 1950 Radar refined and used as a result of a major World War II development effort.
  RFID invented in 1948.
1950 - 1960 Early explorations of RFID technology, laboratory experiments.
1960 - 1970 Development of the theory of RFID.
  Start of application field trials.
1970 - 1980 Explosion of RFID development.
RFID tests accelerate.
Very early adopter implementations of RFID.
1980 - 1990 Commercial applications of RFID enter mainstream.
1990 - 2000 Emergence of standards.
. RFID widely deployed
  RFID becomes a part of everyday life.
