RFID or Radio Frequency Identification is a technology that incorporates the use of electromagnetic or electrostatic coupling in the radio frequency (RF) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum to uniquely identify an object, animal or person. RFID is increasingly used in industry as an alternative to the barcode. The advantage of RFID is that it does not require direct contact or line-of-sight scanning.

RFID is divided into 2 types of technology, namely passive and active. With Active RFID, read distances of up to 30m and more can be achieved. The tag is more expensive than Passive RFID technology and as a result is generally used on high value items that require constant monitoring or man tracking.

Passive RFID, on the other hand, is a far more popular, cost-effective technology. Within this technology, different frequencies exist which enable one to provide solutions based on specific requirements. RFID solutions are designed on a case to case basis, using existing product building blocks available from a solutions provider.
